EERA Joint WORKSHOP - ES, e3s, CSP, DfE

Call for abstracts open now!

Deadline: 25 March 2025

Energy storage technologies play a critical role in modern energy systems, enabling the integration of renewable energy sources and improving overall system reliability. These technologies allow excess energy to be captured and made available when it is most needed. This capability not only improves the efficiency of the energy system, but also supports the transition to a more sustainable energy future. However, the operation of energy storage systems needs to be optimised to minimise inefficiencies that can arise from a number of factors, including energy conversion losses, self-discharge rates and operating strategies. Effective optimisation involves the use of advanced algorithms and predictive analytics to efficiently manage charge and discharge cycles. This enables operators to ensure that energy is stored and released at the most favourable times, maximising overall system efficiency. Accurate modelling of energy storage technologies is critical in current energy models to enable better integration of renewables by accurately representing how these systems respond to fluctuations in energy supply and demand. This helps energy system operators to make informed decisions, ensure reliability and stability, and evaluate different operational strategies and their impact on efficiency and costs.

This workshop will bring together experts in energy storage, energy system integration, energy modelling, digitalization as well as socio-technical-economic aspects of the energy system to share advancements in each discipline and seek to enhance synergies among them in order to further advance the energy transition.

We are now launching a call for abstracts (dealine 25 March 2025) to identify contributions for our workshop on the following topics:

  • Advanced control strategies and algorithms for the real-time energy management of energy storage systems.
  • Operational decision-making of energy storage systems based on optimization methods or smart operation rules.
  • Application of predictive analytics, big data and machine learning to the operation of energy storage systems.
  • Hybridization of energy storage technologies.
  • Operation of energy storage systems for sector coupling.
  • Resiliency-driven operation of energy storage systems.
  • Innovative business models based on smart operation strategies.
  • Integration of energy storage systems operation in energy systems models.
  • Lifecycle and sustainability assessments considering smart operation strategies.
  • Cross-disciplinary projects tackling challenges in storage, integration, and modelling.
  • Role of societal, economic and cultural factors in the operation of energy storage systems.
  • Open-source software tools for the operation of energy storage systems and databases with operational data of energy storage systems.
